“The world of work against the rise of the far right”: IAFTUN at the European Parliament
“The world of work as a collective force: an antidote to the rise of the far right” is the title of the event presenting the International Anti-Fascist Trade Union Network (IAFTUN) at the European Parliament on 14 October. Registration opens at 4:30 pm for a 5 pm start in Room 5E1 of the Spinelli building.
The event is being hosted by three political groups in the European Parliament: The Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D), the Greens/European Free Alliance (Greens/EFA), and The Left. The focus will be on the role of the labour movement in countering the international rise of the far right. The event will provide a platform for labour representatives from around the world and Members of the European Parliament to discuss shared strategies for safeguarding democracy, workers’ rights, and social justice, as well as for strengthening international cooperation and solidarity.
After an introduction by the IAFTUN coordinator, the opening remarks will be delivered by MEPs Sandro Ruotolo (S&D), Benedetta Scuderi (Greens/EFA) and Marc Botenga (The Left).
Representatives of the IAFTUN network will then contribute from different regions: Antonio Lisboa (International Secretary of Brazil’s CUT and ITUC Vice-President); Tirivanhu Marimo (General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, ZCTU); Mikyung Ryu (International Secretary of the KCTU, South Korea) via video message; and Cristina Faciabien (International Secretary of CCOO, Spain).
The event will conclude with a discussion lasting one hour, including questions from the audience and contributions from affiliated organisations and MEPs from other political groups who are committed to opposing fascism and the rise of the far right in Europe.
The event will close at 19:30. The event will be live streamed. Interpretation services will be available in Italian, English, French, and Spanish.
